Flat, Wall, Wire, or Chainsaw: Choosing the Right Concrete Cutting Method
A demolition crew gets called to open a trench across an occupied warehouse floor, cut out a thick reinforced footing near the wall, and square off a doorway in the same shift. One saw won't do all three well. Reach for the wrong method and you burn a shift, chew through consumables, and still don't have a clean cut. The tool you pick before the first spark decides your production rate, your noise and dust exposure, and ultimately your cost-per-cut. This guide breaks down when a flat saw, a wall saw, a diamond wire saw, or a concrete chainsaw is the right call.
The four methods, in plain terms
Each of these methods removes concrete with diamond segments, but the way they present those diamonds to the work is completely different, and that difference is what makes one a good fit and another a waste of a day.
Flat saw (floor saw)
A flat saw — also called a floor or slab saw — is a walk-behind or self-propelled machine that runs a diamond blade vertically down into a horizontal surface. It is the workhorse for slabs, pavements, trenches, and expansion joints: anywhere you need straight, horizontal cuts at a controlled depth. Depth is limited by blade diameter, so blade size is matched to the required cut depth and the machine's power. Wall saw (track saw)

Diamond wire saw

It has effectively no depth limit, so it is the method of choice for massive foundations, bridge piers, and any section too thick or too irregular for a blade. Read the table as a starting filter, not a rulebook. Most real jobs combine methods: a flat saw scores floor panels, a wall saw drops the vertical faces, a wire saw severs the thick footing, and a chainsaw squares the pockets and openings.
How to actually choose on site
1. Start with orientation and access
If the cut is a horizontal surface you can walk on, the flat saw is almost always fastest and cheapest to run. If the cut is vertical, angled, or overhead, the wall saw takes over. When the section is thicker than a blade can reasonably step, the wire saw wins because it wraps the work instead of reaching into it. When you need a clean square opening or an inside corner, the chainsaw is the only tool that gets there without overcut.
2. Weigh the reinforcement
All four cut rebar, but dense reinforcement in a massive pour is where diamond wire pulls ahead, distributing wear over a long loop rather than a single blade rim. For flat and wall sawing in reinforced concrete, match the blade bond to the material and keep it sharp — a glazed blade in hard, low-abrasion concrete slows you down and drives up cost.
3. Then run the cost-per-cut math
Don't compare sticker prices; compare total cost divided by the volume each method removes on your job. A wire loop can be expensive up front but cheap per cubic foot on a deep foundation. A chainsaw chain is economical for a handful of openings but pricey if you try to bulk-cut with it. Factor in labor, downtime, water and slurry handling, and the cost of a botched cut that has to be redone.
Safety runs through every method
Whatever you choose, keep the cut wet to control silica dust, guard rotating and moving parts, and secure the section so nothing shifts as it's freed. Match blade, wire, and chain speed to the manufacturer's rated range for the tool, never exceed it, and inspect consumables before every shift. The right method cuts faster; correct setup and dust control are what keep the crew safe while it does.
