5/8"-11: the small-bit workhorse

The 5/8"-11 UNC thread is the go-to for smaller-diameter bits and lighter rigs. It is easy to spin on and off, which makes it ideal for operators running a lot of small conduit or anchor holes where the bit gets changed constantly. The trade-off is torque capacity: on large-diameter deep cores the smaller thread has less shoulder area to transmit load, so it is generally left to the smaller barrels.

1-1/4"-7: the global default for real coring

If you own one core rig, odds are the spindle is 1-1/4"-7 UNC. This is the industry-standard connection for stand-mounted wet coring across most of the world. The larger 1.25-inch diameter and coarser 7-TPI thread give you a big shoulder for torque transfer, which is exactly what you want when you are pushing a 6- to 10-inch barrel deep into reinforced concrete. When in doubt about what to order for a professional rig, 1-1/4"-7 is the safe default and the most cross-compatible with adapters.

M41: the Hilti pattern

M41 is the metric coarse connection found on Hilti-pattern machines and systems built to match them. Bits threaded for M41 will not spin onto a 1-1/4"-7 spindle and vice versa there is no forcing it, and you should never try. If your rig is a Hilti or a Hilti-compatible motor, order the bit in M41, or run a proper adapter rather than improvising.

Field rules that save threads and shifts

  • Identify before you buy. Read the spindle stamp or the manual. A 1.25-inch male spindle with coarse threads is 1-1/4"-7; a 0.625-inch spindle is 5/8"-11; a metric 41 mm coarse spindle is M41.
